RED DAHLIA Tie vest top. My hat tip to Mihitabel’s Appliqué Western Men’s shirts but for a lady. I wanted to make something fitted, fun, and easy to pair with anything or stand alone.
Looking through the vintage Mihitabel fabrics I have been entranced by the level of hand worked detail, including in the fabrics. I’ve learned so much about true artistry just touching them, running my hands over these hand woven and hand drawn Indonesian batik prints from the 1970’s. Each is a work of art. Touching the hand signed signature of the artist who drew them, or the name of the place that they were made. Imagining the person’s face who drew them and the life they lived. I read from a collector that these prints took anywhere from 1 month to 1 year to craft. They were used for royalty, and the dye process is something that can’t be replicated from one to the next, assuring hey are all unique. It makes so much sense to me why Carolyn collected these. They are as complex as her dye process.
I have showcased these in the front yokes and the back appliqué.
The base fabric of this vest is vintage 6–oz Italian Waterless Crosshatch Selvage Indigo. The body is fully self lined and I have added hand dyed suede ties and facing. Look through the slides to see some of this beautiful artistry that is nearly 60 years old.
